Ranked battle on tap tonight for Chickasaws
It may be just a non-district game tonight [Friday], when New Hampton travels to Waukon, but it definitely has a “big-game” feel about it.In the first Associated Press Class 2A poll of the season that was released Monday afternoon, New Hampton was ranked fifth while Waukon was a spot behind at sixth.New Hampton is also ranked seventh by the Des Moines Sunday Register while Waukon is unranked in that poll. The Chickasaws are coming off a 35-12 win over Class 3A Charles City while Waukon hammered Class 1A MFL-Mar-Mac 54-8.“It’s definitely a good test for us,” New Hampton football coach Scott Frerichs said this past weekend. “They do some nice things and it’s turned into a pretty good rivalry game for us.”The two teams have been in the same district the past four seasons, but after the Iowa High School Athletic Association completed its every-other-year re-districting process, Waukon remained in District 3 while the Chickasaws moved to District 2.In its win over MFL-Mar-Mac, Waukon showed off a balanced attack — running for 194 yards and passing for 182.Quarterback Abe Schwatz was 11-for-14 passing and threw for five touchdowns while Mitchell Snitker had seven carries for 144 yards and caught four passes for 64 more.Tonight’s game kicks off at approximately 7:30 p.m. and will follow the fresh-soph game that begins at 5.
