A month like no other
Chickasaw County Engineer Dusten Rolando laughed — albeit a bit wearily — Wednesday afternoon as he talked about the condition of roads in the area.“You know, right now, I’d love to take a ‘dust call’ because that’s usually what we’re getting this time of the year,” he said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t had any of those lately.”Instead, Rolando and his secondary road crews are still trying to get roads open after last week’s flooding — the third time in less than a month that Chickasaw County had been hit by a torrential rainfall.Rolando said this week that although he doesn’t have any final numbers, he believes the Aug. 24, Sept. 9 and Sept. 22 floods have cost the county somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 million in road damages and overtime. As of Wednesday, Rolando said between 10 and 15 roads remained closed in the county although he hopes most of them will be open by this weekend.Yet, he’ll be the first to tell you that the back-to-back-to-back floods have left secondary roads in less than ideal shape.
