Glen Angell was born September 6, 1929 in Burr Oak Township, near Osage, Iowa, the son of Merlyn W. and Alma A. Angell. Glen and his 2 brothers were raised on the family farm and received their education at the Burr Oak # 1 Country School.
Upon entering high school, Osage High in Osage, Iowa, he found he loved wrestling for the 'Green Devils'. Glen qualified at the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, IA, all 4 years, with a State Championship earned at 135 pounds in 1947. As Glen's sons would tell it, they always knew Dad was in the stands watching and making their moves with them. At the wrestling events, the people around Glen made sure they left plenty of room for him to make the moves with the boys and his boys could always hear Dad say “Inside switch” from the stands.
Glen was united in marriage to Helen E. Brink on March 27, 1951 at the Sacred Heart Church in Osage, IA. To this union, 8 children were born. Glen worked various jobs the first few years of their marriage as a farm hand on his uncle's farm, an insurance salesman, as well as selling and delivering fuel oil.
In 1956, Glen got his 'ideal job', a Conservation Officer for the State of Iowa. As Helen tells the story, they went from making $8000 dollars a year to making $3300 per year. As the kids tell it, they ate a lot of wild game, even possum, but as mother tells them “you never ate possum”. To help make ends meet Glen, along with Galen Folkers, the Chickasaw County Sherriff, built grandmother clocks. Glen's specialty was to hand carve each walnut clock's lower front with an engraved design, this was his personal signature per each clock they made. Next to his family, he commented that he truly enjoyed 33 years working as an Iowa Conservation Officer. The camaraderie of working with his fellow Officers was another of his great joys. Glen retired in 1989, then occupied his retirement with keeping things working at the local laundromat that he and Helen were part owners of until they sold it in 1992. He loved the outdoors, not only hunting fox and trapping, but he also had a great love of fishing. When talking about his fishing buddies, the one thing that stands out, even after his fishing days were over, he always said “He's a good guy” . Glen also loved to play cards with his children and grandchildren, with the sweets close by, of course.
Glen is survived by his wife, Helen of 69 years, of New Hampton. Eight children; Valerie Folkers of New Hampton, Timothy (Marsha) Angell of New Hampton, Daniel (Jane) Angell of Maple Grove, MN, Steven ( Laurie) Angell of New Hampton, John (Pamela) Angell of Big Rapids, MI, Kenneth (Ileana) Angell of Niceville, FL, Elizabeth (Leon) Geerts of Alta Vista, Christine (Matt) Wheeler-McManus of Cedar Falls, 34 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren.
