‘D’ keys Chickasaws’ NEIC win

Anyone who watches Isabel Leichtman knows how aggressive she is on offense. She never stops.  But after the Chickasaws won  Friday night, 59-37 over Waukon, what the team's leading scorer wanted to talk about was defense.  “Lexi [Rasmussen] and Bethany [Zenk] took Waukon's posts out and made sure they didn't get the ball,” Leichtman said after the conference-opening win. “The guards were working on getting steals and rebounds.”  Waukon only led very early in the game as two free throws by Leichtman tied the game at two and with the Chickasaws pressing, the New Hampton junior had a steal and basket to put New Hampton up 4-2 with six minutes left in the first quarter.  Rasmussen then took control as she muscled up a shot against the Indian defense for two, hit a 3-point shot, then put up an off-balance basket for seven straight Chickasaw points, giving the home team an 11-7 lead. When Darian Wegner made a conventional 3-point play, New Hampton led by 10, 17-7.  “The key component there was our defense,” said Leichtman.  For the full story, please see the Dec. 6 Tribune.
