Council says no to golf carts

The long journey of an ordinance that would allow golf carts and UTVs on New Hampton’s streets may not be over quite yet despite the fact that the City Council did not approve the first reading of the ordinance on Monday night.City leaders have been debating the ordinance for the past several months, and Monday’s reading was the first after council members asked for more safety precautions be put into it.The council voted 3-2 for the ordinance, with Cory McDonald and Jill Eike voting against. However, ordinances must receive at least four votes to pass each of the three readings before they can be placed into city code.On Wednesday, City Clerk Suellen Kolbet said that Councilman Joe Denner, who was unable to attend Monday’s meeting, has asked her to place the ordinance on the Oct. 3 agenda.Under law, only those who voted against a proposed ordinance or those who were not at a meeting, can bring a rejected ordinance back to life.On Monday night the council received a report from SEH Engineering on possible upcoming street projects.For the complete story see the 9/23/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
