The clock is ticking for area students

The halls of New Hampton and Turkey Valley schools have that “end-of-summer” smell.It's that fresh wax-plenty of cleaner aroma that signifies that classes are just around the corner.And they are. Three weeks from today (Tuesday), summer ends for hundreds of area kids when the 2016-17 school year commences.“We're definitely going to be ready to go,” said Jay Jurrens, who is in his first year as superintendent for both New Hampton and Turkey Valley, “and although some of them won't admit it, I think the kids are ready, too.”In reality, the 2016-17 school year — at least on the financial end — started on July 1.And activity picks up at schools long before classes begin. This week in New Hampton, for example, football, cross country, volleyball and band camps are being held, and fall sports can officially begin practice next Monday.Jurrens said he is adapting well to working in two different school districts after the sharing agreement between New Hampton and Turkey Valley went into effect July 1.For the complete story see the 8/2/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
