City Council approves the first reading of golf cart ordinance

The vote for the golf cart ordinance was tabled at the last City Council meeting, but the first reading of the ordinance was approved on Monday night.Leisure Time Golf Cars owner Nick Noehl supplied a list of 50 names that are in favor of passing the ordinance to the New Hampton City Council.Mayor Deb Larsen said she talked to a person from Oelwein, which has a golf cart ordinance, and that person said it was no big deal in that town.Councilmember Scott Perkins said he hasn't heard a lot of people saying the ordinance would be a great idea but instead has heard more people saying they don't care about the ordinance.“I hear more about how we [the council] should have other things to be working on,” said Perkins.Perkins also said he hasn’t seen any naysayers at any of the council meetings protesting.The first reading passed on a 4-2 vote with Jill Eike and Cory McDonald casting the two no votes.To be enacted, the ordinance must be approved by the City Council during three separate readings.
