Chickasaws win district title
Trevor Ambrose threw a one-hitter and Carter Stochl hit a key two-run double to lead New Hampton to a 3-0 win over North Fayette in a Class 2A district title game on Saturday.Ambrose was brilliant on the mound as he had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings before giving up a soft single to Nick Baumler in the top of the seventh inning."I honestly had no idea I had a no-hitter," Ambrose said after striking out nine and walking just two, "and even if I did I wouldn't have cared. It's all about winning right now. We're still playing baseball, we're still hanging out together and that's all that matters."For the first four innings, though, North Fayette Valley's Trevor Hurd was up to the challenge. He had a no-hitter until Keegan Tenge singled with two outs in the fifth. After Ryan Gorman singled, Stochl launched a 2-2 pitch into the left-field corner and the Chickasaws had a 2-0 lead. That was all Ambrose would need as New Hampton, ranked third in the state, improved to 29-4 and earned a substate date with Denver on Tuesday in Waverly. The Cyclones upset No. 10 Dike-New Hartford 5-3 in eight innings to earn their trip to Waverly.— For more on this story, see the July 19 Tribune
