Chickasaws weather back-to-back storm
At the half, New Hampton’s girls were up by 14 Friday night against Decorah and the next afternoon — as the Chickasaw girls were taking on Schaeffer Academy in Decorah’s “Border Battle” — they were, again, up by 14 at the half.
Both ended with big Chickasaw wins as New Hampton’s defense allowed only one double-digit quarter of the combined eight — a 10-point fourth quarter against Decorah.
Coach Chad Pemble thought the final margin of victory Saturday, which ended up being 35 points, would have been bigger had the girls not played a conference foe the night before.
“Playing back-to-back games is something you have to do during the season and we weathered it with two victories,” he said.
But he also said the 54-30 Friday night win over the Vikings was “no cake walk,” despite the 0-7 Viking record.
“Their kids are athletic and physical, but we were getting in the gaps and denying passes, we got some steals that way which helped us.”
