Chickasaws give top-ranked NFV battle before falling 21-7

New Hampton gave top-ranked North Fayette Valley everything it could handle Friday night, but the TigerHawks used two second-half touchdowns to post a 21-7 victory in the opening round of the Class 2A state playoffs."I'm proud of you guys and I want you to hold your heads up high," New Hampton coach Scott Frerichs told his Chickasaws after they finished the season 8-2.North Fayette Valley took a quick 7-0 lead, but New Hampton answered right back with a Keaton Geerts 2-yard touchdown run and an Oscar Gayton PAT to tie the game with 4:26 left in the first quarter.After a scoreless second quarter, North Fayette Valley took the lead when facing fourth-and-10, TigerHawks' quarterback Tate Hovden completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Josh Guenther midway through the third quarter to go up 14-7. The TigerHawks turned a New Hampton fumble into a Trey Kuehns 1-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter to push their advantage to 21-7.Twice — once in the first half and once in the fourth quarter — New Hampton drove inside the North Fayette Valley 10-yard line but came away empty.Still, it was a banner year for the Chickasaws, who went 8-1 in the regular season to qualify for the playoffs for a sixth straight year and for the 17th time in Frerichs' 24 years as New Hampton's head coach.— For more on this story, see the Nov. 1 Tribune
