Chickasaw girls get first win

Right off the bat, Waukon had some advantages over New Hampton Friday.
Even though the Chickasaws played to a first-quarter 13-13 tie against the Indians, Waukon used those advantages to pull away for a 48-32 win.
The next day New Hampton had more of a level playing field when they took on Waterloo Columbus in the Holiday Showdown at Upper Iowa University, winning 65-54 over the Sailors.
One of the Waukon advantages had to do with height. The Indians had three 6-footers take the floor during the night while the tallest player for the Chickasaws stood at 5-9.
“They’re considerably longer than we are, that made it hard to maneuver around them,” said coach Chad Pemble.
“That caused us to rush our shots and we didn’t shoot as much as we wanted. We had 47 shots, it’s not bad but it’s a little low.”
Waukon also has four of their five starters back from a year ago, all juniors.
“They have a nice team and now those juniors have a full year of varsity experience and it showed. They’ll win a lot of ball games.”
