Cheerleaders have big goals

Lead Summary

Makayla Biddle wants to get one thing out of the way when it comes to cheerleading.  “It’s not just pom-poms and cheering at football games,” the Nashua-Plainfield senior said. “It’s way more than that.”  Yes, it is, and the Huskies cheer squad is chasing after a title this weekend at the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Association’s State Championships in Des Moines.  And they’ve put a heck of a lot of time into getting ready for the competition that will be held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.  Practices began in June, and since school started, coaches Leslye Horn and Megan Rausch have put the students through their paces three times a week, often for 3, 3 1/2 hours at a time.  “I don’t think people get it at all,” senior Chelsi Bailey said. “It’s a lot of work, and if you saw what our routine looked like a few months ago and what it looks like now, you wouldn’t even recognize it.”  More on the story may be found in the Nov. 3 Reporter.
