Body of missing Plainfield woman may have been found

State medical examiners are testing found human remains thought to belong to Cloris Mehmen of Plainfield, Bremer County Emergency Management confirmed Thursday morning.The remains were found near Horton by a farmer picking corn, Emergency Management Coordinator Kip Ladage told the Press. The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office was immediately called to the scene near a residence at 1477 120th Street on Wednesday afternoon, around 1:30 p.m.The body was located approximately half a mile from Mehmen’s residence, a press release from the sheriff’s office said. An autopsy has been scheduled in Ankeny.The remains are thought to be Mehmen since she is the only missing person reported in the immediate area, Ladage said.“Nothing’s positive yet until confirmed by the state. We’re hoping it will be quick, within a few days, but we’re not sure,” Ladage said. “We wait until we hear positive identification from the state medical office, and then we’ll know whether the Mehmen family can move forward with this.”Mehmen, 76, was reported missing in early July after wandering from her Plainfield home. Mehmen was an Alzheimer’s and dementia patient with a previous history of leaving the house unannounced, officials said.In the days following her disappearance, hundreds of volunteers and over 20 state and local agencies joined in the search to follow leads in the immediate county all the way down to Cedar Falls and Waterloo.
