Back in the lineup
Kyle Smith’s gregarious personality came through loud and clear during the phone interview last week. Granted, the former New Hampton High School basketball star has a lot to be thankful for as he has helped the Central College basketball team get off to a quick 4-0 start this season. “It’s fun, way fun,” the college junior said, “and even though we kind of had high expectations, we’ve embraced them.” The Dutch are coming off a season in which they claimed the Iowa Conference tournament championship and a bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament, and they are the preseason pick to repeat as league champs. Smith is a big part of the Central equation, too. After seeing extensive playing time as a freshman, Smith settled into a “sixth-man” role a year ago and averaged 11.2 points a game.
