Awash in red

For this election, at least, Iowa shed its label as a “purple” state.Tuesday, the Hawkeye State was pretty much red, the color designated to the Republican Party, and about the only solace for local Democrats was hanging onto its Iowa House of Representatives and scoring two wins among the three contested Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors seats.The rest of Election Day, though, belonged to the GOP.President-elect Donald Trump, despite finishing second in the popular vote, stunned the political experts with a win over Democrat Hillary Clinton, and Trump won Iowa by 10 percentage points.And that was just the start for the Republicans.Charles Grassley won a seventh term in the U.S. Senate, Steve King claimed a comfortable victory in the Fourth Congressional District and Republicans took firm control of the Iowa Legislature, thanks in part to Waylon Brown’s surprisingly easy victory in the Iowa Senate District 26 race.For the complete story see the 11/11/2016 New Hampton Tribune.
