After long discussion, parking will still be allowed on Water

A request for no parking on the south side of Court Street from Water Avenue to Foley Avenue from Marvin and Mary Ann Hackman was discussed at the New Hampton City Council meeting on Monday.
Marv Hackman bought the ground he is on now, across from the New Hampton Methodist Church, in 2001 and built a building there in 2004. Over time the business has grown and so has its equipment, in size.
“It has become increasingly difficult to maneuver my trailer into the driveway with cars on the street,” said Hackman. “It has become a safety hazard.”
He is proposing having no parking along the street during business hours.
Hackman’s neighbor Dan Dietz asked the council to keep parking the way it is and he feels if he has company over there will be no place for them to park with the parking eliminated.
“Water [Avenue] is a busy place to park on,” said Dietz. He said it is also hard for him to back out on Water because it is busy and he has a back driveway that has a steep incline and is hard for him and his mother to drive on.
Because of these reasons he has been parking his vehicles along the street.
“I don't like being told where I have to park,” said Dietz.

Carolyn Shaw spoke on behalf of the trustees of the Methodist Church in New Hampton, saying no parking would make for a very difficult situation when the church holds events and the community comes in.
“Many are older people and can’t walk far,” said Shaw.
