Dazzling era ends as Trojans take second at state

 Turkey Valley’s remarkable run at the Class 1A state girls basketball tournament ended Friday night with a second straight second-place finish.Top-ranked Springville held off a furious rally from the second-ranked Trojans for a 45-36 victory to claim the title for the second consecutive year.Turkey Valley finished the season with a 23-3 record, but it didn’t go down without a fight.Trailing 31-17 heading into the fourth quarter, the Trojans caught fire and outscored the Orioles 14-4 in the first six minutes of the frame to cut the deficit to 35-31.But it was as close as Turkey Valley would get as Springville pulled away for the win.The Trojans were led by Shelby Reicks and Sadie Nymeyer, who both had 13 points.The loss ended the prep careers for six seniors  — Sloan Huinker, Kayla Gebel, Reicks, Nymeyer, Morgen Kuennen and Abbey Ott — who led Turkey Valley’s program to new heights.In the four years they were part of the program, Turkey Valley went 85-16, including a dazzling 72-6 over the course of the past three seasons.— For more on this story, see the March 7 Tribune
