Chickasaws must settle for second
Twenty-four hours after New Hampton came up short in ending Waverly-Shell Rock’s dominance at the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament, the results still stung. “I’m not going to lie,” Chickasaw senior Ryan Gorman said Sunday night, “we wanted this really bad. To not get it done, is going to hurt for a while ...” The 160-pound senior’s voice trailed off for a moment, but when it returned, it was filled with determination. “We still have really big goals, and this doesn’t change it at all,” he said. “We’ve got to get our heads on straight and go back to work.” Yet, Gorman is right. This one is going to hurt for a while. New Hampton felt confident that this was the year that it could end Waverly-Shell Rock’s run of NEIC tournament titles; instead, the Go-Hawks went 10-4 in the placing matches, piled up 239 points and beat the Chickasaws by 11.5 points in what was basically a two-team race the entire day.
