Seniors lead the way for Turkey Valley

Blazek blows away field, Kruse finishes eighth in Trojans’ opener at Charles City

Cambree Kruse couldn’t help but smile on Thursday night in Charles City.

The senior Turkey Valley cross country runner knows this could be a special season, not only for her personally, but the rest of her focused and determined Trojan teammates.

Kruse, along with three other TV seniors, began the first race of the last season they’ll compete in a Turkey Valley uniform at Wildwood Park in the season opener.

It was one last turn around the bend and a final sprint to the finish line on the public golf course that hosts the Trent Smith Invitational in Floyd County. For TV, the relatively flat course should have been the second meet of the season after the planned opener at Edgewood-Colesburg was cancelled because of heat for the second year in a row.

“Ultimately, I think it’s a pretty fast course,” said TV head coach Sarah Bakula.

Bakula sure wasn’t wrong as Jalyssa Blazek blew away the field, including friendly rival Billie Wagner of South Winneshiek, and won her race in a time of 19:12.
