Chickasaws claim homecoming victory
New Hampton showed its grit and toughness Friday night as it overcame a sluggish start to beat Crestwood 30-14 in a Class 2A, District 3 game.
The win was the Chickasaws third straight and improved their overall record to 3-2 and their district mark to 2-0.
Trailing 7-0, New Hampton cut the deficit to one early in the second quarter as Braden McShane scored on a 10-yard run during a drive that included a 37-yard pass from Mason Lane to Drake Wemark on a 3rd-and-28 play.
New Hampton took the lead for good with just seven seconds left in the first half when Lane found Wemark in the corner of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown, and an Aiden Roberson two-point catch made it 14-7 heading into the break.
The Chickasaws added to their lead when McShane, who unofficially finished with 250 yards, raced 65 yards — tip-toeing down the sideline for the final 15 yards — and Lane hooked up with Wemark for a two-point pass to 22-7 midway through the third quarter.
After the Cadets used an 80-yard drive to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter, New Hampton put the game away when McShane scored on an 18-yard run and Isaac Howe added a two-point run.
New Hampton will next play host to Osage, a 14-8 winner over Forest City, next Friday night.
