Upstart Cadets storm back to upset Chickasaws

Despite jumping out to 14-0 lead, New Hampton falls to Iowa Falls-Alden 21-20

Hobbled, then humbled.

Iowa Falls-Alden kept knocking Friday night versus the favored New Hampton Chickasaws.

It didn’t take long for the upstart Cadets to cave the door in and bust their way into the win column.

New Hampton has the splinters to prove it.

Once the smoke cleared in this Class 2A prep football upset – the final slapped up on the scoreboard seemed inconceivable just a few hours earlier.

Final score – Cadets 21, Chickasaws 20. This one was a stunner —  no doubt about it.

With New Hampton (1-1) seemingly in control – up 14-0 at intermission – those knocks on the door started to get a lot louder once the sun went down and the game turned into a barnburner.

“We knew Iowa Falls had a good football team coming in even if some of the people across the state did not,” said longtime New Hampton coach Scott Frerichs.

Early second-half body shots led to an uppercut from the ropes as the underdog Cadets (1-1) left the Chickasaws’ ego bruised and at least one player battered in what was a jarring night for both teams.

“I thought it was a hard-fought game,” said Frerichs, in his 28th year at the helm of the Chickasaw football program.
