Chickasaw boys fall to a pair of Class 4A squads

New Hampton can’t hold off Mason City, gives Cedar Rapids Washington a battle

New Hampton didn’t get a win during the opening week of the 2018-19 season, but in so many ways, the Chickasaws, at least in their coach’s eyes, didn’t come up empty, either.

In fact, Ryan Rausch believes his team is awfully close to being 2-0.

“I saw so many good things the first two games,” Rausch said, “and if we can build on those things, learn from what went wrong, I still think we have the makings of an awfully good basketball team.”

New Hampton couldn’t hold a 16-point second half lead against Mason City on Thursday as the Mohawks used a 34-point fourth quarter to beat the Chickasaws 83-78. Two days later, Cedar Rapids Washington held off the gritty Chickasaws for a 65-58 victory.

“Here’s what I liked about today,” Rausch said. “We competed, we were tough and we didn’t back down. That’s what I want from these guys. We don’t care if the Chicago Bulls get off the bus, we’re going to play them, and we’re going to play hard.
