Scrimmage is ‘good thing’ for Chickasaws
The New Hampton football team will head to Decorah tonight [Friday] to finally play someone other themselves. The Chickasaws and Vikings, for a second straight year, will scrimmage against each other, beginning at 7 p.m. “It’s a good thing for us,” New Hampton coach Scott Frerichs said. “They have a good program up there with a really good group of guys as coaches. There’s a mutual trust, and it’s something I think benefits both programs.” Frerichs coached against Decorah head coach Bill Post for years, and Post assisted Frerichs when he coached the North squad in the Shrine Bowl in 2015. For years, New Hampton held an intra-squad scrimmage during the annual Check Out the Chickasaws Night, but a year ago, Decorah came to New Hampton, and this year, the Chickasaws are returning the favor. “It’s easier honestly,” Frerichs said. “You don’t have the time it takes to divide teams evenly, and your units, at least for a while, can play together. It’s good way to see where you’re at.”
The schedule for the evening may be found in the Aug. 18 Tribune.
