Todd Merfeld dies at 35

Todd Merfeld age 35 of Nashua, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. 

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with Rev. Denny Hanson presiding. 

Friends may greet the family 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church in Cedar Falls on Friday.  Online condolences for Todd's family may be left at

Todd Steven Merfeld was born Aug. 13, 1982, in Cedar Falls, the son of Bruce and Peggy (Edwards) Merfeld. He attended Cedar Falls Elementary and middle school, and was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School in 2001. Todd was extremely active in Boy Scouts during high school and college. Todd became an Eagle Scout and spent several summers working at Camp Ingawanis near Waverly. He was a vigil honor member of the Order of the Arrow. Todd attended Hawkeye Community College. He began working for Sherwin Williams and spent 13 years with the company. Todd decided to return to school and received his degree from Le Cordon Bleu in St. Paul, Mnn.

He completed his internship at the Prairie Club in Valentine, Neb, where he met Shayla Krisher. The couple married June 18, 2016, at Camp Ingawanis near Waverly. The couple raised three children together.

They moved to Nashua and owned and operated the TownHouse Bar & Restaurant in Nashua, for two years. Todd currently worked as the Food Service Manager at the Bremer County Jail.

Todd enjoyed camping, the boy scouts, cooking, and taking walks. Todd and Shayla in their free time would enjoy going somewhere new together. Spending time with his family and friends was especially important to Todd.

Todd is survived by his wife, Shayla; two sons, Justice Palmier and Hunter Star Boy of Nashua; daughter, Hayden Star Boy of Nashua; parents, Bruce and Peggy Merfeld of Cedar Falls; one sister, April (Sam) Miller of Cedar Falls; niece and nephew, Mya and Asher Miller of Cedar Falls; paternal grandfather, C.J. "Skip" Merfeld of Sun City, Ariz; maternal grandmother, Mary Wanderscheid of Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Alice Merfeld; maternal grandfather, Kenneth Edwards.
