Waukon slows game down, tops Chickasaws
Although New Hampton held Waukon below its scoring average of 50 points per game Friday, that’s not as good as it sounds.
First of all, the Indians also held the Chickasaws nearly 20 points below their average of 48 points per game and second, when Waukon had their lead, they went into a stall.
“They did that when we played the first time, too,” said coach Chad Pemble. “When they’d come down on offense they’d take their time and take the air out of the ball. When they stall it’s tough to get the ball back.”
The score, 44-29, was very similar to the first time the teams played as Waukon finished with one more point and the Chickasaws were exactly the same.
“We did what we needed to do, we limited their two guards, that was one of our keys on defense, and we gave up five offensive rebounds, that’s only one more than our goal,” Pemble said. “We only turned the ball over 11 times, that’s pretty darn good. Pretty salty for a high school girls basketball team.”
Waukon leads the conference in steals, averaging over 18 per game. But they only had eight against the Chickasaws.
