Undermanned Chickasaws crown three champs, take third at NEIC

Lead Summary

Carter Reicks didn’t celebrate when he became the third New Hampton/Turkey Valley wrestler — joining Max Babcock and Evan Rosonke — to earn a Northeast Iowa conference championship Saturday at the NEIC meet in Charles City.
It was more a sigh of relief.
The top seed in the tourney at 220, Reicks was down 1-0 going into the third period against the two seed, Waverly-Shell Rock’s Lucas Walker, but his escape tied the match, and that’s what the score was at the end of regulation.
“I was nervous all day long,” said the Chickasaw senior. “He knew what I was going to do, he knew I liked going upper body, everybody knows it. He kept me from getting to my style.”
A reversal in overtime ended up providing the winning margin for Reicks, but that wasn’t the only title match that came down to the wire.
Rosonke, who, like Reicks, advanced to the finals at 182 with a first round bye and a second round pin, was up during his match against WSR’s Gavin Wedemeier.
Rosonke, the top seed and defending champ at 182, was caught at the end of the second period and taken to his back, which tied the score at eight. The Go-Hawk wrestler gave up an escape point, but rather than hang on to his one-point lead, Rosonke went on the offensive with time winding down, getting a takedown and back points for a 14-8 win.
