Trojan girls open ’19 with UIC victory
The holiday layoff didn’t appear to slow down Turkey Valley’s girls much as they came back from the break with their first win of 2019, over conference rival Clayton Ridge Friday.
There may have been just a little rust, as it took a couple minutes for the Lady Trojans to get on the board, but halfway through their first quarter they led 7-2, ending the period with a 19-5 lead on their way to a 57-33 win.
The stats don’t necessarily tell the whole story, as coach Carla Nymeyer credited some stifling Turkey Valley defense, in part, to one of her rookies.
“Great way to start the New Year,” she began. “Our defense showed a lot of hustle and intensity with Kylie Wurzer setting the tone.”
Though Turkey Valley didn’t excel in the shooting department — they shot 36 percent from both the field and free throw line — Clayton Ridge was lower in both categories, and didn’t have nearly the number of attempts from the field.
