Tough day at state

It was just the kind of thing coach Chuck Stanton was worried about, when he found out two weeks ago that the state trapshooting meet format would be changed.Instead of all athletes shooting 100 targets Friday and 100 on Saturday, coaches picked a day and team members shot all 200 that day.Stanton picked the wrong day.“They told us Saturday the winds were 40 miles per hour-plus,” said Stanton.Friday, on the other hand, was not windy, and the top nine scores from the state meet came from squads that shot that day. Of the top 20 squads, 18 shot on Friday.New Hampton Red finished with a 913, which was 33rd among roughly 250 full squads. Along with Zach Heying’s 190 and Christian Schwickerath’s 186, Kevin Burgart had a 183 while both Austin Schmidt and Karson Crooks turned in a 177.“Everybody did the best they could, under the circumstances,” Stanton said. “I don’t know why they changed the format, that’s part of my frustration. I’d have been just as upset if somebody else got the bad weather and we got the good. It needs to be fixed.”Each squad had a morning session and one in the afternoon. Christian Schwickerath started with a 25 Saturday morning and ended Saturday afternoon with a 25, but in between the wind brought his scores down.“We didn’t mind the heat,” he said of the near-90 temperatures. “But the wind was behind us, just when you’re about to shoot the target would dive down.”Schwickerath finished with a 186, with classmate Zach Heying leading the Chickasaws with a 190.“We thought we’d probably have to get a 197 or 198 in order to win anything down here,” Heying said. “Everybody that’s shooting today is probably out.”But New Hampton did pick up three awards at the state meet and two of them came from Kennady Nie. The senior placed in the e-league standings, which takes the best scores from throughout the season. Among the 470 girls registered, Nie was third with a 198.Nie also earned all-state honors, which combined e-league scores with her state meet score of 187. She was fourth in those standings.
