No-no for Chickasaws

New Hampton Ryan Gorman had decent pitching stats — a 3-0 record and a 2.33 earned-run average — heading into Tuesday’s Northeast Iowa Conference game with Charles City.But the Chickasaw senior was far from satisfied with his previous performance on the mound.“Honestly, I was sick and tired of me starting games the way I was,” Gorman said after no-hitting the Comets as the Chickasaws rolled to a 10-0 five-inning win. “Tonight, I told myself I was going to give my team a chance right from the start.”He accomplished that goal and then some as he retired the first 14 batters he faced and only a two-out walk in the fifth inning kept him from a perfect game.Gorman said one of the keys for him as he lowered his ERA to 1.83 was throwing first-pitch strikes, which he did to 13 of the 16 hitters he faced.“It’s all about getting on top and staying on top in the count,” Gorman said. “When we do that, we feel pretty confident."
