NH/TV clinches three medals, N-P one at state wrestling

Three New Hampton/Turkey Valley wrestlers and one from Nashua-Plainfield assured themselves Friday of spots on the medal stand with wins at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.
The Chickasaws got quarterfinal wins from Mason Cleveland at 126 and Evan Rosonke at 182 while Max Babcock rebounded from a hard-fought quarterfinal loss to pick up a win in the consolation second round at 145.
Cleveland rallied from a 4-1 first period deficit to beat second-seeded Kain Luensman of Monticello 6-5 in his quarterfinal match while Rosonke pinned Carlisle’s Ethan Reed in the second period of his quarterfinal.
But both New Hampton/Turkey Valley wrestlers fell in the Friday night semifinals and will wrestle for third place in the day session on Saturday.
Babcok, meanwhile, will wrestle for seventh-place after falling in the consolation third round.
In Class 1A, Nashua-Plainfield’s Jakob Whitnger bounced back from a quarterfinal loss to win two consolation matches — including a dominating 9-0 win over Denver’s Brooks Meyer, who beat Whitinger at the district meet — and still can finish as high as third during Saturday’s day session.
