New Hampton’s first champ still has fond Drake memories

Michele (Carlin) Sailstad couldn’t help but laugh when she was asked about the 1984 Drake Relays.
“Oh goodness, that was 35 years ago,” she said, “so I’m a little fuzzy on the details. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great memory — one I’ll always have — and I remember I won but the exact details? If I mess it up, I’m blaming it on how long it’s been.”
Back then, she was a New Hampton High School senior who had placed sixth at Drake the year before.
