New Hampton girls coach finds silver linings at coed
Don’t get New Hampton girls track coach Jeanette Laures wrong, she loved the fact that her team finally got to run a meet this past Thursday when the Chickasaws hosted the New Hampton Coed. But by the end of the meet, Laures was scrambling.“The meet turned out to be a juggling act trying to fill spots as injuries came up,” she said as three of her top athletes — Bailey Knowlton, Sadie Tenge and Rachel Rinken — either did not compete or bowed out of the meet early. “We’re hoping to be back to full strength by the end of next week. We always have to debate if kids can run through the pain and it’s never an easy decision, but we’d rather err on the side of caution.”The loss of the trio, no doubt, hurt the Chickasaws in the team standings as they scored 103 points to finish fourth. Iowa City West easily won the meet, piling up 196.5 points to beat second-place Sumner-Fredericksburg by 70.5 points.“It was very nice to just finally have a meet,” said Laures, whose team hadn’t competed since the NEIC Indoor on March 20 and had seen its first four outdoor meets cancelled because of the winter that just doesn’t want to end. “We were all ready to run, and with the conference meet being a few weeks away, we really needed to see how we’re improving. It’s just not a lot of time to get times and splits on kids.”
