New Hampton girl captures AAU state title

The 2019 Iowa AAU Kids State Wrestling Championship made history this year, as it was the first time that girls had their own separate division from boys. New Hampton eighth grader, Tierney Perkins, also made history by being the first girls state champion at the event for the 150-pound weight class.
Chickasaw Wrestling Club coach  Andy Hugeback said he felt like he was dreaming when Perkins won.
“She put her hands to her head and was close to tears. Then it hit me, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, we just won a state title.’”
This year was the first time Perkins had ever wrestled. She attributes her success as a state champion to her strong work ethic. 
Hugeback raved about this work ethic and her maturity as a wrestler. One example of this is when Perkins had to miss a practice. She told him face-to-face that she was not going to be able to attend it ahead of time. After the following practice, she made sure to stay late and ask Hugeback what she had missed so she could learn it.
Also at the state AAU tournament, the Chickasaw Wrestling Club's Ben Tenge finished fifth in his bracket.
