N-P hopes for some mat time
Al Frost has seen a lot in his long career as a high school wrestling coach, but he’s never had one like last week.
And so as he prepares his Nashua-Plainfield wrestling team for this Saturday’s Top of Iowa Conference meet, he’s not sure what he’s going to get.
“We just haven’t had a lot of practice,” he said, “and obviously, there isn’t a wrestling coach in the world who says ‘we’ve been practicing too much’ so yes, on the wrestling part, that concerns me. We need to get into the room and get some work in, get back to a routine.”
Still, he appreciated the fact that West Fork was willing to allow his Huskies into what became a triangular last Tuesday, and it wasn’t just because Nashua-Plainfield rolled to three relatively easy wins.
With the death of Nashua-Plainfield senior Caleb Ulrichs two days before what was supposed to be the Huskies’ final home meet of the year, Frost felt like his team needed to be together.
“It’s a tough, sad, tragic deal,” he said, “and our kids have been through a lot. It’s one reason I thought that home meet would be good for us. For a couple of hours, they could be together and just wrestle. They needed it.”
But because of an ice storm, school was called off at Postville, South Winneshiek and Central Elkader, and none of the schools could make it to Nashua that night, so instead, the Huskies traveled to Sheffield and beat Riceville 51-24, routed Tripoli 76-6 and rolled past the host Warhawks 78-6.
