Mistakes add up to big loss for Chickasaws

Say this for the New Hampton football team Friday night: It responded to the first punch Clear Lake delivered.
But the Chickasaws didn’t have any answers for the rest. 
A week after getting knocked out of playoff contention with a double-overtime loss to Crestwood, New Hampton endured a 42-7 pounding at the hands of Clear Lake.
“We gave up too many big plays, and we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties too often,” New Hampton football coach Scott Frerichs said after his team, which began the season with high expectations, fell to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in Class 2A, District 3 play. “Against a good football team — and Clear Lake has a good football team — you just can’t do that.”
And those mistakes started early.
A costly offsides penalty on a fourth down play kept Clear Lake’s opening drive, one that ended with a Jaylen DeVries-to-Drew Enke 22-yard touchdown pass, but New Hampton had an answer as it drove 60 yards on seven plays — all Tristan Sweitzer runs — to tie the game 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
