Letting one slip away
This one, no doubt, is going to sting for a while.
That’s because too often New Hampton was in own worst enemy Friday night in its season opener against Aplington-Parkersburg as the Chickasaws couldn’t hold a 12-0 second half lead and fell to the Falcons 13-12.
“It was a little frustrating because we had five or six plays where something went wrong — either on our part or we had a penalty,” New Hampton coach Scott Frerichs said, “and if any one of those plays comes out differently, I think we win that game. Really, we probably should have been up more than 12-0 but all we can do now is learn from this and get better next week.”
On a night when the game ended shortly before midnight because of a two-hour rain delay, the Chickasaws not only saw a two-score lead evaporate but they also failed to score three times when they had the ball inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line, had a key interception called back because of a penalty and finished the night taking nine flags that cost New Hampton 90 yards.
