Lessons learned

Kiersten Tenge figured she and her teammates would be nervous when New Hampton opened the abbreviated 2020 softball season last week.
She figured right, but after getting rid of the nerves in the season opener — a tough 1-0 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock — the Chickasaws bounced back with an impressive 10-0 victory over Waukon on Wednesday before a large crowd at Mikkelson Park to give their new coach, Lisa Rude, her first career victory.
“I think we were a lot, you know, a little nervous,” Tenge said, “and Waverly was a lot better than last year. But once we got that game out of the way, we just were more conformable and just went out and played.”
Tenge was outstanding in both games — throwing back-to-back one-hitters — but she was in total command against Waukon. After walking six against the Go-Hawks, she worked ahead in the count against Waukon and gave up just one free pass.
