Juniors pitch Chickasaws to non-league win
Keegan Kane’s pitching slump has been put to rest and then some.
The New Hampton junior pitched four strong innings of relief to combine with starter Connor Hackman on a one-hitter Thursday as New Hampton rolled to a 9-0 win over Central Springs in their final tuneup before tonight’s critical Northeast Iowa Conference doubleheader at Charles City.
We’ll start with Kane, who after a strong sophomore season, was expected to be a mainstay on the mound this season, but after sailing through his first four appearances in 2018, he hit an extended speed bump — giving up eight runs in 5 1/3 innings midway through the season.
“I wasn’t there mentally, I guess, and it was frustrating,” he said. “I don’t know what happened, but I just had to go back to focusing on one batter at a time and all that stuff.”
“All that stuff” is working. After throwing two scoreless innings that included four strikeouts Tuesday against Waukon, Kane put together another solid outing on Thursday in Manly. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out five to pick up his second win of the season.
