Fourth-ranked Green Devils sideline Chickasaw girls

The heartbreak started early in New Hampton’s regional girls basketball game Wednesday.
In the first minute, in fact.
That’s when Isabel Leichtman went to the floor with a knee injury, and she wouldn’t return.
Not having its leading scorer in the game — against a team that’s ranked fourth in Class 3A with a 23-0 record  mind you — was not what New Hampton needed. Their season ended in the regional semifinal with a 51-24 loss to the Green Devils.
“Obviously the worst possible way for an athlete to end the season,” said Chickasaw coach Chad Pemble. “I feel really bad for her and her teammates, they’re all hurting for her.”
It was the first thought Bailey Knowlton had after her basketball career ended. 
“My heart breaks for Isabel, she was only 11 points away from her 1,000th point and I think she would have gotten it if she wouldn’t have been hurt.”
Leichtman, who led the team in scoring during her sophomore, junior and senior years, averaged 14 points per game. While it was too early to speculate on the type of injury, she had to be carried off the floor, which isn’t good either.
When Leichtman went out, the score was 3-1 Osage, but a 3-point shot by Sadie Tenge put the girls up 4-3.
