Defense lifts Chickasaws to win over Crestwood

New Hampton’s defense came up big in the fourth quarter Friday night as the Chickasaws secured a 13-7 victory over rival Crestwood in a Class 2A, District 3 tilt.
 
The Chickasaws came up with two key defensive stops to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in district play in New Hampton’s first victory over the Cadets since 2015.
 
Ryan Pickar gave New Hampton a 7-0 lead with a four-yard touchdown run midway through the second half, but Crestwood answered right back with an 8-yard scoring run to knot the soore at seven.
 
The Cadets looked like they were going to take a lead into halftime, but New Hampton recovered a fumble at their own 3-yard-line in the final minute of the half to preserve the tie.
 
New Hampton took the lead by turning a turnover — Alex Kriener recovered a Crestwood fumble on a punt return — as Mason Lane came up with a key competition to Drake Wemark to keep the drive alive and then scored on a quarterback sneak.
 
But late in the fourth quarter the Cadets drove inside the New Hampton 20 before the Chickasaws forced four incomplete passes to secure the victory.
 
The Chickasaws host Class 2A’s third-ranked Clear Lake next Friday.
