Chickasaws win 2A sectional title, advance 10 to district meet
Saturday’s sectional tournament for New Hampton/Turkey Valley was in a word stupendous.
The Chickasaws has seven individual champions, three runners-up and piled up 243.5 points to win the Class 2A sectional meet by 15 1/2 points over second-place Crestwood.
“Our guys really came together today and wrestled their butts off,” New Hampton/Turkey Valley co-coach Andy Geerts said. “We couldn’t be prouder of the way they competed. … We’ve got more work to do, but man, today was pretty dang good.”
Mason Cleveland (126), Carson Babcock (138), Max Babcock (145), Hunter Pesek (152), Cameron Rasing (160), Evan Rosonke (182) and Carter Reicks (220) all claimed championships while Johnny Dreckman (113), Brayden Anderson (132) and Tom Clark (285) all finished second to punch tickets to next week’s district tournament in Independence.
And just as importantly, New Hampton/Turkey Valley powered its way into Tuesday’s regional dual tournament that the Chickasaws will host on Tuesday. NH/TV, the two-time defending Class 2A state duals champion and currently ranked third in the dual rankings, will wrestle Mt. Vernon while Independence takes on Hampton-Dumont at 6 p.m., and the two winners will meet for a trip to the state duals that will be held on Feb. 13 in Des Moines.
