Chickasaws snap skid with win over Oelwein
New Hampton’s four-game losing steak — in which two of the losses came by a point — is over, but it took a lot of work Friday night for the Chickasaws to overcome Oelwein and earn a 14-8 victory in a Class 2A, District 4 game.
Oelwein marched 80 yards on its opening drive and took an 8-0 lead before New Hampton got untracked on its second drive, which was set up my a Drake Wemark 24-yard punt return. Seven plays later, Avery Throndson scored on a 5-yard run to cut the deficit to 8-6, but the two-point pass attempt failed.
The Chickasaws dominated much of the third quarter, and a Jacob Durnan perfectly placed punt turned the field position battle in New Hampton’s favor.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, New Hampton faced a third-and-11, and the Chickasaws got that and more when Conner Rochford hit Wemark in stride for a 31-yard scoring pass with 11:49 to go and when Rochford hit Nathan O’Donnell on the two-point conversion pass, New Hampton had a 14-8 lead.
But Oelwein wouldn’t go quietly as the Huskies put together its best drive of the second half, taking seven minutes off the clock, but New Hampton forced a turnover on downs. The Huskies got the ball back two more times, but Wemark forced a fumble with a sack and Ryan Pickar picked off a pass.
New Hampton will close the regular season with a home game against Independence next Friday.
