Chickasaws ho-hum about record victory
Cory McDonald sat on top of the riding mower and took a break from dragging the infield Saturday morning. He was asked about the celebration — or more to the point, the lack of one — after his New Hampton baseball team set a school record with their 30th win of the season Friday night with an 8-0 shutout of Clear Lake. “You know, it was a lot like when we won the conference title,” he said, “there really wasn’t one.” And then McDonald, as he has done often this season, left it to one of his seniors to tell the rest of the story. “We were talking after the game and I asked the seniors what they wanted to say and Carter Stochl probably said it best,” McDonald said. “He said he’d trade the 30 wins and the threepeat conference title for our real goal.” That “real goal” is not only making it to the state tournament for the first time in school history but also win the dang thing. And the road to Des Moines begins today [Tuesday] when New Hampton hosts Osage in a Class 2A district semifinal game that will be played at Mikkelson Park and will begin around 7 p.m.
