Chickasaws fall to third-ranked Waukon

 
The result wasn’t what New Hampton wanted but the effort was just fine as far as coach Scott Frerichs was concerned Friday night when Waukon beat the Chickasaws 28-20.
The Indians came into the game ranked third in the Associated Press Class 2A poll, but New Hampton gave Waukon all it could handle.
“I know we don’t like losing,” Frerichs told his team after the game, “but you guys gave us everything we wanted tonight.”
New Hampton took a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter when Braydon Fisher capped an 82-yard, 10-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Waukon struck back with an Evan Armstead 10-yard scoring pass with less than two minutes left in the half and added a two-point pass to take an 8-7 lead.
The Chickasaws appeared to retake the lead on the last play of the half when John found Keegan Kane for a 25-yard scoring pass but it was called back because of a penalty.
The teams traded three touchdowns in less than a minute in the third quarter.
Waukon went up 14-7 on a Mitchell Snitker 31 yard run off a lateral before Kane cut the lead to one with an 89-yard kickoff return. On Waukon’s first play from scrimmage, Armstead hauled in a 72-yard scoring pass to give the Indians a 20-13 lead.
New Hampton tied it early in the fourth quarter when Areon Day deflected a pass and Kane picked it off for a 2-yard interception return and Austin Hemann’s extra point tied the game at 20.
Waukon, though, scored on its next possession to take the lead for good and drop New Hampton to 1-1.
The Chickasaws will open Class 2A, District 2 play next Friday when they travel to Forest City.
