Chickasaws fall short in showdown

When Jess Geerts walked into the Waverly-Shell Rock gym Tuesday, her team was already in the second set, after losing the first one 25-19.
As it turns out, there are more important things than volleyball. 
Geerts had to fly to Colorado for a family emergency Sunday and when the family member — her mother — was out of the woods, Geerts flew back home, landed in Cedar Rapids and rushed to Waverly.
“Jade (Fye) was face-timing me the game, so I was able to listen and watch it somewhat,” said Geerts, who, by the way, wasn’t driving. “I had an idea coming in where we were sitting, what was working and what wasn’t.”
Even though the Chickasaws made attacks that would probably have gone for kills against many teams in their 3-0 loss, this was Waverly.
“I think there will always be this fear of Waverly-Shell Rock until we beat them, like we did Charles City. It felt like we were one step behind, we couldn’t get into system. I feel like we can play better.”
