Chickasaws embrace underdog role at NEIC
It says something about the depth on the New Hampton/Turkey Valley wrestling team that just a few days before the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament, the Chickasaws lineup wasn’t quite set.
“Here we are three days before the conference and we’re not sure yet and maybe that’s weird,” co-coach Andy Geerts said, “but yeah, I think it shows you the competition we have in our room and that’s a good thing. Our guys push each other and that’s a great thing.”
The Chickasaws head to Charles City on Saturday seeking a second straight NEIC tournament title, but both Geerts and his fellow co-coach, Matt Paulus, concede New Hampton/Turkey Valley is in an underdog role.
Waverly-Shell Rock, which is ranked second in Class 3A, has nine ranked wrestlers and the favorite to wrestle back the tournament title it held for 13 years before New Hampton/Turkey Valley grabbed the crown in 2018.
