Chickasaws draw first blood against rivals
Zach Wemark got the pitch he wanted, didn’t waste it and with one swing of the bat gave Carter Stochl all the runs he would need Friday night. And just like that, New Hampton became the only team unbeaten in Northeast Iowa Conference play.Wemark’s three-run home run and Stochl’s brilliant four-hit pitching lifted New Hampton, ranked second in Class 2A, to a 4-1 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock in a battle of the two teams who most consider the two to beat in the NEIC.“He gave me a fast ball right down the middle,” Wemark said, “and I’m not going to lie, it felt great coming off the bat.”And when the ball sailed over the right-field fence, Wemark’s blast had given New Hampton a 3-0 lead in the first inning.“We knew we had to come out and get on them right away,” said Wemark, who hasn’t hit a home run since he was playing JJV ball as a freshman. “I didn’t care how we did it, but getting a lead like that with the way Carter was pitching was all we needed.”
