Chickasaws defeat Go-Hawks in five sets; win NEIC championship
It took all five sets, but the New Hampton volleyball team claimed the Northeast Iowa Conference title after defeating Waverly-Shell Rock - who entered the match undefeated in conference games - on Tuesday night.
New Hampton came out firing on all cylinders, as they took a commanding 9-3 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-14 victory.
The Go-Hawks answered by taking the second set 25-17.
The third set was back-and-forth throughout, as the Chickasaws jumped out to an 11-6 advantage, but Waverly-Shell Rock responded to claim the lead at 19-16 and went on to win the set 25-23.
The fourth set was tight until the very end, but back-to-back kills by Kiersten Tenge to end the set gave New Hampton the win at 25-21.
In the fifth set, the Go-Hawks looked poised to win the match after leading 4-1, but New Hampton answered with a rally to take the lead at 8-7. They continued to use this momentum to top Waverly-Shell Rock in this final set 15-11.
Rachel Rinken was spectacular throughout the evening for the Chickasaws, as she totaled a season-high 22 kills to go along with a pair of aces.
New Hampton concludes Northeast Iowa Conference play at 6-0 and moves to 28-2 overall for the year.
