Chickasaws claim district title
Top-ranked New Hampton ran out to a 6-0 lead, survived a mini-South Winneshiek comeback and rolled to a 9-2 victory over the Warriors Saturday in a Class 2A district title game.
"We've been thinking about this since last year," said senior Keegan Tenge, who got the win with four innings of hitless relief to get the win. "It's not that we're not happy with this, but we want more, a lot more."
And on Tuesday, the Chickasaws, who improved to 32-2, will have a chance to exact some revenge because their opponent will be Denver, the team that beat New Hampton 10-2 in extra innings in last year's substate game. The Cyclones advanced to the substate with a 12-1 win over Jesup Saturday.
New Hampton jumped on South Winn for two runs in the first inning on a Ryan Gorman double and Zach Wemark sacrifice fly and then appeared to break the game open with a four-run second inning. The Warriors, though responded with two in the top of the third and coach Cory McDonald deicded to go to Tenge.
He faced the minimum 12 batters; in fact, the only baserunner Tenge allowed was erased when Noah Fye threw out his second runner of the night trying to steal.
Tuesday's game begins at 7 p.m. and will be played in Cedar Falls, with the winner advancing to the state tournament that will be played at Principal Park.
