Chickasaw girls run win streak to three
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
That seemed to be the New Hampton girls basketball team’s mantra on Tuesday on the road versus Waterloo Columbus (4-4).
That perseverance paid off for the Chickasaws and head coach Chad Pemble after a 44-42 win over the Sailors sent New Hampton into the Christmas break on a three-game win streak.
With the score tied at 42 and the clock winding down, NH leading scorer Carlee Rochford’s shot to pull out the win missed the iron underneath with 10 seconds left in regulation. Chickasaw senior Brooke Usher rebounded the miss, but misfired in her attempt to give the Chickasaws an advantage on the scoreboard. Usher was able to rebound her own miss and her putback would end up being the game’s winning shot with just under one second left on the clock.
The Sailors’ attempt to send the game into overtime or win the game after a timeout was not successful as Columbus was unable to get a shot off.
The come-from-behind win for New Hampton — which trailed 16-5 after one period of play and still trailed by 11 points at halftime — was all hustle and heart according to Pemble.
